Position: Part-time, temporary contract grant writer

Reports To: Director of External Relations, in collaboration with the Development Operations Manager

Work Location: This position is remote. 

Compensation: $34.71/hour for a total of $10,000.

Hours: 72 hours/month for four months.

MASSCreative requests proposals for grant writing services for fiscal year 2027. Applications will be considered until the position is filled.  

ABOUT MASSCREATIVE:

MASSCreative works to build a more vibrant, connected, and equitable Massachusetts by advocating for a well-supported creative sector. Art, culture, and creativity are essential to healthy communities, civic engagement, and economic prosperity. We are a small team of effective and passionate individuals, supported by a statewide board of directors, who work at the intersection of public policy, advocacy, and community power-building for the creative sector.

MASSCreative, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) organization and is affiliated with the MASSCreative Action Network, a 501(c)(4). The contracted grant writer will primarily support the 501(c)(3) but may support both organizations, with responsibilities and time allocated in accordance with applicable nonprofit regulations. Our work is nonpartisan.

SCOPE OF WORK AND DELIVERABLES:

The contracted work includes grant research, proposals, and applications for MASSCreative, Inc. general operating and programmatic support. Programmatic grant work may include, but is not limited to, soliciting support for MASSCreative’s nonpartisan, civic engagement program “Create the Vote,” webinar series, and emerging regional advocacy networks. The contractor may be asked to create proposals for future projects not identified in this RFP. 

The grant writer will work closely with the Director of External Relations and Development Operations Manager to achieve MASSCreative’s fundraising goals around foundational and corporate support in FY27. 

MASSCreative is seeking a grant writer with a proven track record in:

  • Creating complex proposals from diverse funding sources.

  • Experience fundraising for advocacy organizations or projects.

  • Background working with stakeholders in the creative sector.

We expect the scope of work to include the following: 

  • Information gathering to understand existing funding and to develop a case for support. 

  • Prospect research, including initial funder screening, to identify and prioritize potential sources of funding. 

  • Drafting of boilerplate grant proposals, cover letters, and letters of inquiry. 

  • Compilation and checklist of standard application components/attachments frequently requested by grant funders. 

  • Customization and submission of proposals to potential funders based upon grants calendar. 

  • Maintaining a grants calendar to guide proposal development and submission. 

  • Recommendation for grants management process (reporting, cultivation, and stewardship) based upon best practice. 

  • Solicitation and incorporation of funder feedback into grant materials as possible and appropriate. 

  • Introduction to funder contacts (at screening, solicitation, or acceptance stages) to facilitate handoff of relationship to local contact. 

  • Project management of grant writing contracts. 

BUDGET & TIMELINE:

The budget for this position shall not exceed $10,000. 

MASSCreative seeks to hire a contractor for four consecutive monthly retainers at 72 hours/month. The preferred contract schedule is between September - December 2026. 

The contractor will invoice MASSCreative monthly and will be compensated upon completion of their allotted hours per retainer.  

MASSCreative will mutually discuss and refine the scope of work with the selected applicant and shall negotiate a performance schedule that is suitable for both the organization and contractor.

Issuance of this RFP does not obligate MASSCreative to award a contract or to pay any costs incurred in the preparation of proposals responding to this RFP.

  2. An excerpt from a successful grant written by the applicant that is representative of their writing style. The excerpt should not exceed 2 pages and should not contain any confidential or proprietary information. 

  3. Schedule of proposed fees. 

  4. A minimum of two (2) professional references from clients for whom the applicant has successfully performed similar work.
