Yes on 3 Campaign

MA_YesRallySign_v2.pngMASSCreative joined the bipartisan coalition Freedom for All Massachusetts in support of Question 3, the transgender rights bill that appeared on the November 6 ballot. The bill passed, ensuring that discrimination on the basis of gender identity in places of public accommodation continues to be prohibited! MASSCreative supports equal access and equal treatment for transgender artists, visitors, audiences, colleagues and neighbors in Massachusetts.

Question 3 is a referendum on legislation passed by the Massachusetts House and Senate in July 2016, that added gender identity to the list of prohibited grounds for discrimination in places of public accommodation, resort, or amusement. A YES VOTE would keep in place the current law, which prohibits discrimination on the basis of gender identity in places of public accommodation. A NO VOTE would allow discrimination on the basis of gender identity.

MASSCreative joined the Yes on 3 Coalition because:

  • It is the right thing to do. The first line of our mission statement states,“MASSCreative works to build a more vibrant, healthy and equitable Massachusetts.” Supporting a law that makes Massachusetts more inclusive, and accepting is part of the organization’s mission-driven work.

  • Standing in favor of Question 3 is good for the creative sector. Arts and cultural organizations should support measures that work to protect the rights of employees and arts and cultural event attendees and visitors. Sending a clear message that Massachusetts arts and cultural organizations welcome everyone means more talent, more visitors, and more participation across the creative sector.

  • As an advocacy organization with over 400 member groups, MASSCreative is in a unique position to conduct voter education over a potentially confusing ballot question. There is already a strong campaign to confuse and scare voters on what a “yes” vote means. We have a significant opportunity for MASSCreative and the creative sector to positively impact the ballot question outcome.

  • Finally, MASSCreative is joining forces and finding common ground with a diverse and broad coalition. MASSCreative member organizations including American Repertory Theatre, Boston Dance Alliance, Boston Gay Men’s Chorus and The Theater Offensive have joined the Yes on 3 Campaign. We join all five major New England sports teams, the Boston Public Library, Google, Eastern Bank, Fidelity Investments, as well as the Mayors of Boston, Worcester, Springfield, and Pittsfield.
