MASSCreative 2019 Summer Interns



Tyia Coston comes to MASSCreative as part of the Bloomberg Arts Internship program, she is a rising senior at the John D O'Bryant School of Math and Science, where she is an honor roll student and participates in the Engineering Pathway Program. She uses art to help get her through long stressful days of school. Tyia plays varsity softball, piano and she likes to draw. She plans to join the U.S Navy and get shipped out next year to serve eight years in Cryptologic Technician Networks and possibly later pursue a career in construction management. Tyia is working with Tracie and Rachel to engage BPS youth in the #BosTeenArts campaign to ensure every BPS student graduates with one year of arts education! She plans to do this by spreading awareness through social media with videos about all of the great contributions that the arts have to offer inspiring teenagers like herself. 


Olivia King comes to MassCreative as a summer intern from Tufts University where she is pursuing a double major in Civic Studies and International Relations. On campus she participates in social justice activism through serving as Graphic Designer for Tufts Students for NARAL, a reproductive rights organization, and in her role as Secretary for the Tufts chapter of Amnesty International. She also serves as a Democracy Coach for Generation Citizen, teaching action civics to middle schoolers. Hailing from the town of Medford, Oregon, Olivia studied studio art throughout high school and gained a strong appreciation for the role of the arts in her region. She’s MASSCreative’s Campaign and Policy Research intern, focusing on Create the Vote. She’s enjoyed learning more about and connecting with different Massachusetts communities, and is excited to continue spreading awareness and advocating on behalf of the arts!



Grace Varela is a rising sophomore at George Washington University in Washington, DC, majoring in communications  and double minoring in history and theatre. She is originally from Massachusetts, graduating from Milton High School in 2018. The arts have been part of her life since she was three years-old, when she started dancing and she has continued to sing, dance and act for her whole life. At school, she is a member of the all female acapella group, The GW Pitches and is the Public Relations Director for Generic Theatre Company, GW’s oldest student theatre company. She is MASSCreative’s Digital Organization and Communications intern, working on developing MASSCreative’s online and social media presence and also creating digital components to upcoming campaigns. She has enjoyed being able her to connect her passions of advocacy, communications and the arts into her internship this summer! 




Kelyn Zhang is a recent graduate from Brandeis University with a degree in HSSP (Health: Science, Society, and Policy) and Anthropology. She is originally from China and discovered her passion for advocacy work during college. She used to work as a peer advocate and volunteer coordinator at Brandeis Prevention, Advocacy, and Resource center for sexual violence issues on campus. She is also very passionate about art, dance especially, and is a dancer herself. During her free time, she likes to watch movies, work out and enjoy a good conversation with friends. As the Development intern at MASSCreative this summer, she is doing research on prospects and foundations, and maintaining database and files. She has enjoyed learning about advocacy work in the creatives sector and looks forward to further exploring more development strategies and communication techniques at MASSCreative.
