At MASSCreative, we believe in building a healthy, vibrant, and equitable Massachusetts.

That’s why we officially endorsed Boston’s Community Preservation Act and are organizing the Boston creative community to support the ballot initiative.

Question 5, on the ballot for Boston voters this November 8, the Community Preservation Act is an important revenue tool to help Boston build more affordable housing, improve our parks, restore historic and cultural landmarks, and create new jobs.

CPA funds are generated by a small surcharge on local property tax bills matched by a statewide trust fund to maximize their impact. Every year, the City would generate $20 million or more for CPA projects, including at least $2 million specifically for historic and cultural preservation.

The timing couldn’t be better. As Boston heads into the implementation phase of the Boston Creates Cultural Plan, the Community Preservation Act provides Boston an opportunity to establish a funding stream to support cultural spaces and facilities.

On July 27, Chair of the Yes for a Better Boston Coalition Joe Kriesberg from the Massachusetts Association of Community Development Corporations and Greg Galer, Executive Director of the Boston Preservation Alliance met with a set of Boston arts and cultural leaders to help plan how the arts, cultural, and creative community can best participate and add value to the campaign.

Coming out the meeting, we’re excited to recruit Boston arts and cultural organizations to join the Yes for a Better Boston Coalition and endorse the campaign and engage the sector through Get out the Vote efforts leading up to Election Day.
