I strongly support access and participation in arts education being used a strategy to broaden the curriculum for every Massachusetts child because as a retired teacher I was able to reach underperforming students through puppetry arts across the reading and writing curriculum. Just yesterday I reread a 4th grade yearbook from 90s. What the kids liked the best was the trips to museums & creating a school circus (involved much problem solving, team work, and curriculum standards.) Other whole language units using science and social studies also used hands on art and music activities that children now in their 20’s remember today.

In low performing districts, we frequently see that access to the arts are what help keep students engaged and focused. They can be a tremendous source of pride in performance for children who do not excel in traditional academic subjects. I am glad to see that arts education are included in the stae plan!
