Today, Mayor Marty Walsh and Boston Chief of Arts & Culture Julie Burros unveiled details about the highly anticipated Boston Creates – the Boston Cultural Planning Initiative. Over the next 15 months, arts and cultural leaders and supporters will have the opportunity to engage and provide input to shape the vision and priorities for Boston's cultural sector.

From the onset of his campaign in the 2013 Mayoral Race, Mayor Walsh has said that he wants to lead an arts renaissance in the city. In his speech at City Hall today, Mayor Walsh recalled the Create the Vote Forum on Arts, Culture, and Creativity which brought more than 600 voters out to the Paramount to hear the candidates’ positions on the issues.  The mayor saw the passion of the electorate, and now, with the start of the planning process he is following through on one of his major campaign commitments.

Chief of Arts and Culture Burros said the key to developing a robust and innovative plan will be the engagement of all parts of the city in the planning process. “This is a transformative moment. We cannot do it without the input of the people of the city.”

The city launched the Boston Creates website where folks can nominate themselves and others to be a part of a volunteer leadership council, or join 16 community engagement teams. Check out the site to look for opportunities to engage. MASSCreative will publicize opportunities in the coming months.

Jim Canales, president of the Barr Foundation, along with the Klarman Family Foundation, who is funding the plan, called Boston Creates a “once in a lifetime opportunity to develop a thoughtful and comprehensive plan for the city. Boston is a world class city that deserves a world class cultural plan.”
