How to make an #ArtsMatter video

Choose a quiet, comfortable location

Choose a spot to film that is quiet so you can easily be heard. Make sure you feel comfortable in the location, a spot where you won’t be nervous and won’t be fidgeting or moving unnecessarily. If possible, also choose a location that is meaningful.

For individuals, is there a mural on a quiet street, a park where you see concerts or attend festivals, a room in your house where you create?

For artists, consider your studio or performance space, or a place that contributed to your artistic development.

For organizations, try to select a location with an arts connection. Do you have a place where artists meet? A place where you host or attend festivals? A sidewalk on which people like to draw with chalk?

Wherever you choose to film, also ensure that you have good light and won’t be disturbed.

Plan out what you want to say

The video doesn’t have to be long-- 10 seconds is plenty. However, it is important to know what you want to say before you start filming so that your message is clear and articulate. Here are some questions to consider when planning what you want to say:

For individuals: How have the arts affected you personally? Have the arts improved your stress level, helped you connect with others, changed your professional plans, become something important for you to do in free time? How have the arts affected your community? Do you feel closer to others? Do you understand others better? Have the arts helped your community grow or heal? Do the arts play a significant role in local schools? Should they?

For artists: How do you see the arts impact community? How do the arts impact the economy? What government policies affect you as an artist (ie public funding for the arts, affordable housing, public transportation, etc.)? How have you seen the arts touch others?

For organizations: What role to the arts play in your organization? What benefits do you see stem from the arts? How have the arts impacted your community or the population you serve? How do government decisions about the arts (ie funding) affect your organization?

Your video could touch on several of these questions, or none of them. Consider how your voice is unique, because your voice matters. Make your video personal, powerful, funny, creative, heartwarming, clever-- it can be whatever you want it to be!

Ensure your video is clear and steady

Your video doesn’t have to be filmed with fancy equipment (unless you have it)-- a phone camera works well. However, it is important that your video is clear and understandable. Make sure you either set up your camera in a safe, stable location or have someone with a steady hand film you. Double check that your volume is turned up and recording. Speak clearly, and make sure there isn’t too much background noise. Watch your video before posting it, and be prepared to refilm it if necessary.

Share your video

Once your video is ready, it’s time to share it! If desired, MASSCreative has Arts Matter graphics you can overlay on your video. Find them here. Post your video to Instagram (either as a regular post or on your story), Facebook, or Twitter, and be sure to use #ArtsMatter. You can also tag MASSCreative on Instagram @masscreative, on Facebook @MASSCreativeOrg, or on Twitter @MASSCreative.
