How can artists best work with community developers to create and keep vibrant and livable neighborhoods and downtowns?

To answer this, MASSCreative has partnered with the Massachusetts Association of Community Development Corporations (MACDC) in a one-year program to build knowledge and advance creative placemaking across the Commonwealth.

Creative placemaking is a strategy to shape, reshape or preserve communities and local economies by intentionally leveraging the power of arts, culture, and creativity.

As part of this work, MASSCreative and MACDC hosted a series of workshops to bring together artists, designers, planners, architects, and community developers. The workshops, facilitated by staff from the Metropolitan Area Planning Council (MAPC) were held in Salem, Worcester, and Holyoke. The approximately 70 attendees participated in activities designed to help establish connections across sectors and opportunities to discuss the possibilities for meaningful creative placemaking in their neighborhoods. The program included walking tours, exploring the interesting and unique ways creative placemaking has worked to build social capital in Salem, spur economic development in Worcester and develop city infrastructure in Holyoke.

The workshops highlighted the challenges of bringing creative placemaking to scale and the role state and local government need to play to in supporting projects. In October, MACDC and MASSCreative will hold its final session bringing policymakers and civic leaders into a conversation with community developers and artists about policies to spur more creative placemaking.
